~Since I left my myspace blog to switch to xanga, only to switch to facebook only to find my new home here at WordPress I have about 600 + blogs floating around cyberspace. I got a wonderful idea from John Chow dot com that I should start recycling some of my oldie but goody blogs of yesteryear. So, I am hereby starting a new tradition. Every Thursday, I’ll recycle an old blog. Here goes nothin’! ~
The cover that caused a serious stir.
I get BABYTALK magazine at my house & honestly I was a little shocked at this months cover… it has a picture of a baby breastfeeding with the side view of a woman’s breast. (you can see the pic & an article about the controversy on MSN http://msnbc.msn.com/id/14065706/?GT1=8307 ) When I saw the picture I thought, “whoa, holy boob.” I was taken aback. Not offended, just suprised.
Well, then we had some friends over & a few people saw it sitting on my desk, one replied, “gross,” & the other asked me why I left it sitting out.
After actually reading the article in the magazine which is about why women don’t breastfeed at all or longer –the cover made perfect sense to me & I completely support it. We (mothers) don’t do it because of the lack of support despite the fact that its proven to be the ABSOLUTE best thing for the baby in his/her first year of life.
Well, then I read the MSN article & got even more pissed off. Everyone is so up & arms about this cover. What about all the other magazine covers with endless amounts of cleavage? Or how about Britneys nude “Bazaar” cover last month? Didn’t hear much controversy about her breasts barely covered by her thumbs. And then the fact that everyone goes so crazy about women breastfeeding in public…what is that all about? I think people just need to deal with the fact that breasts ARE NOT just for sexual pleasure. Obviously God created them to have one other very important function… TO SUSTAIN LIFE…hello!
As a breastfeeder myself for 9 months now, I’ve never got such dirty looks in my life! And I use a blanket! Everytime! No one can see anything. I may as well be choking or abusing my child for the looks I get. It’s easy to forget that I am actually FEEDING my child, I am actually giving him the BEST POSSIBLE start on life, I am actually burning 500 calories a day, saving $2,000 a year, etc. etc. I have wanted to give up many times because of this issue.
I just wish people could support mothers breastfeeding IN EVERY WAY CONCEIVEABLY POSSIBLE instead of spending time going crazy over a stupid magazine cover that is only try to encourage women to do whats best for their baby. Breastfeeding in & of itself has soooooo many challenges women don’t need another reason to give it up. (ooohhh, i’m so mad at all the moms especially who wrote in negatively about the article…uhh, i’m just like steaming mad).
Obviously, I am passionate about this issue…hence all the caps locks!
I just love to breastfeed Ransom & want to continue to do that whenever it’s time for him to eat, no matter where I’m at, at the time.
PROUD TO BE A LACTIVIST!
What about you, how do you feel about public breast-feeders? Feel free to disagree with me, I won’t be mad at ya!

I do agree with you that as mothers, we should all be supporting each other WAY MORE than we do, instead of offering judgement up the first opportunity we get, when we see others doing something different than our own choices. FOR SURE! This goes for all parenting choices (breastfeeding, discipline, binky use, everything).
** I’d like to just point out (although I didn’t read the original article, only your blog on it), that sometimes mothers CAN’T breastfeed, for whatever reason, and that it’s not always a choice, based on the lack of support. I tried, and couldn’t, and still received a ton of judgement.
You can’t win, as far as pleasing others, no matter what you choose. So, you just have to make sure you’re pleasing the Lord and making the best possible decisions for your family, and not worry about what everyone else thinks.
p.s. I’m not offended at all when people breastfeed in public, but I do think people should try to be modest about it. I do occasionally here of someone doing it VERY openly (without covering up at all, just whipping out a breast and bearing all), and I do think it’s those people who are making it tough on all the other moms out there who want do do it appropriately. I can certainly see how men would be uncomfortable in those situations that I just mentioned.
First, I like the recycling idea. Second, I am TOTALLY a lactivist
) I hate the negative stereotypes attached to breastfeeding, and you’re right, we’re totally cool with naked Britney, but heaven forbid we see a woman nursing her child! Did you see the story about Selma Hayek? She’s awesome, I loved it
)
April & Kate, you both are awesome, I agree with both of you… and I do feel horrible for those who it didn’t work for, & they should NOT be judged, either. And, I’m sorry April for anyone who treated you poorly because of it.
And yes, I saw what Salma Hayek did & I think it is wonderful!
Great idea! I might steal your Thursday idea if that’s ok!?
