sounds like you had a great experience, grace.

i'm korean, and i still feel a little out of sorts when we visit korean churches. mostly because the rest of my nuclear family is basically white, and i speak very little korean. but we're always greatly blessed by our experiences at korean churches and feel very welcome and loved.

and the food is always awesome.

Grace,
I'm so glad you had such a rewarding experience! Two things I must share:
1. Super duper LOL to the gay resort experience.
2. My granddaddy used to take all of us grand kids to the monster truck race every year until I went to high school. We loved everything about it, but I do see how it could be uncomfortable.

Sounds amazing Grace. Andy & I are members of a church out here that is about 99% Korean-American. There's a good mix of those born here, as well as many born in South Korea who moved here. It's been an amazing and humbling experience for me. The church isn't aiming to be a Korean-American church, it's simply how it has worked out, and while that creates some challenges for me and other non-Koreans, I feel strongly that God is teaching me so much through it all. For a kid who grew up in white suburbia moving to LA has been a big eye-opener, that's for sure.

Grace,

I'm glad you got to have that experience. Sounds like the three of you did quite well. Emma has melted down the only times she went to the Chinese nursery at different churches. It was culture shock for me and her.

a) she was the only one in a sundress in July. Everyone else was dressed in sweats because Chinese parents dress babies very warmly all the time.
b) every time something was about to happen (like a kid falling over) the Chinese ladies made such an overreaction that it scared the kids
c) to remedy the situation, they fed the kids Cheerios

a, b, and c all touch upon regular issues that come up cross culturally when my in-laws visit with the kids. Culture is SO funny.
