Ransom’s Lil Rhys-Car

in My Pregnant Life,Ransom

Dave & I are still pretty torn about that small issue of naming our son who will be born in 6 weeks or less.  We have made some progress in determining that the name “Reese,” is probably the only one we both like except I want to spell it “Rhys,” & he wants to spell it “Reece.”  Such a seemingly small detail, yet it keeps us from being able to make a final decision which happens to be driving me bezerk.

In any case, no matter how you spell it, “Rhys” has been a hot topic both around the dinner table & in conversation with others.  Because of that Ransom will often ask, “are we going to name our baby, Wees?” (He has trouble with the “R” sound).

M'boy loves races cars!

Yesterday Ransom told me he wanted to name my car “Wace Cow” ( “Race Car,”) to which I agreed but asked him this:

G: Would you rather name my car, Race Car or name the new baby Race Car?

R: (After a hearty laugh), “That’s so silly, Mama, you can’t name a baby “Wace Cow”( Race Car))!  Oh! Oh! I have an idea!  What if we name our baby Weese-Cow (Rhys-Car)?

G: I love it!

Dave & I found this whole conversation to be so adorable that if we do name the baby Rhys/Reece/Reese, his nick-name will officially be “Lil’ Rhys-Car.”

Me chiming in my opinion:. From the perspective of an HR professional (LOL trying to sound all important) I would suggest spelling his name as traditionally as possible. What I have seen is that with non-traditional spelling of names people in power make assumptions about the attributes, race/ethnicity, and overall quality of a candidate for hire. Rhys would raise some eyebrows (and probably be mis pronounced often)…so though I LOVE the alternate spelling (esp because it has a y in it) it is possible that it could cause the poor boy un-due name drama growing up. That’s why Kennedy will be the traditional spelling not Kennedi Kynnedi Kynedie or Kennedie. my 2 cents.

I love REESE!

(For some reason I don’t read Rhys as REESE/REECE as a teacher( I would pronounce this spelling as “Ris”… and then would be corrected. Perhaps this is a “me” thing… but as a teacher that is how I would pronounce it… just wanted to be honest

We had the SAME debate for months. We named our son Reece only to change it Rhys later. Rhys IS the original traditional spelling going back to the 12th century in Wales. Reece and Reese are anglicizied versions. Rhys is becoming much more well known and if someone doesn’t know it you only need to tell them once. It is has much more character, especially if you want the Celitc heritage.
